Kitchen Cupboard Essentials

Whilst I’m not suggesting you panic buy or hoard food it’s useful to have some essentials in your cupboards that you can use to make quick healthy meals. Here are some items you might want to have in your cupboards to add to meals:
Potatoes and sweet potatoes – these last a while if kept in a cool, dark cupboard. An easy to cook meal is a jacket or sweet potato baked in the oven and served with butter, black pepper and topped with a protein filling such as tuna, tinned sardines and a side of salad or greens.
Nut butters – peanut, almond or cashew nut butter tastes great spread on oat cakes or added to porridge for extra protein and healthy fat.
Herbs and spices – oregano, turmeric, rosemary, thyme, ginger, sea salt, black pepper – add these to dishes for extra flavour and nutrients.
Tinned fish – tinned tuna, sardines, anchovies, salmon. These last for ages, are a great source of anti-inflammatory omega 3 fatty acids and vitamin D. You can add them to salads, jacket potatoes or make fish cakes.
Coconut milk – for adding to smoothies or soups or for making a curry.
Nuts & seeds – almonds, cashews, hazlenuts, brazil nuts, pumpkin & sunflower seeds are good source of protein, fibre and lots of minerals, ideal for a snack or adding to dishes.
Passata and tinned tomatoes – great for making sauces, stews and soups.
Coconut oil – antiviral and anti inflammatory, can tolerate high heat so great for frying and baking.
Beans and legumes – canned or in sachets, these last for ages and are perfect for bulking out stews and sauces.
Onions and garlic – last for some time in a cool, dark place – they can also be chopped up and frozen in small batches
Butternut squash - also lasts a while and delicious roasted and added to dishes or use in baking.
